Awaken

Program: Awaken
Link: Awaken
Type: Trial/Purchase
Price: $8.95

If you dislike ordinary alarm clocks, this app is for you. Awaken takes control of iTunes and uses it as either an alarm clock, egg timer, or sleep timer. I'll focus more about the alarm clock in this post, but if you'd like to learn more feel free to click here . So, when you set the alarm clock you have several options. Choose the time, date, repitition, etc. Then, you choose which iTunes playlist you'd like it to play and whether you'd like it to repeat and/or shuffle. You're also able to choose a backup alarm incase iTunes bugs out or decides not to open that day. Now, here's the great part...so the alarm doesn't startle you in the morning, simply set it to fade in and its perfect. It also allows you to set the iTunes and computer volume from within the program preferences and when the alarm goes off, it will mirror those settings in iTunes. Now, I'll tell you a little bit about my set up with this program. I have my iMac G5 on the opposite side of the room from my bed. I also have my iTunes streaming to some powerful SoundSticks speakers through AirTunes. Finaly, I've rested my FrontRow remote conviniently on my night table. At my desired time, the alarm fades in and starts playing the song of my choice. As soon as I'm up, I press the play button on my FrontRow remote and the alarm either turns off or snoozes (settings in preferences). I would highly recommend this app. It's already made my morning routine a little easier.

ChaChing

Program: ChaChing
Link: ChaChing
Type: Trial/Purchase
Price: $14.95

Let me start off by saying that from the second I started up this program, it got me excited. ChaChing is a must-try app. It helps you manage your money just like Quickbooks would, but with one big twist. It's actually fun! The interface is great (mac-ish and web 2.0 feel) and it's extremely easy to use. When you first start up the program, you are given the option of creating different accounts. Once an account is created, you simply click the plus sign to add a transaction. A convinient pane pops up to the right side of the screen and you fill in all the transaction info. You can even attach a relevant file. Finally, choose a transaction type (incoming or outgoing) and then click the check button. Done! Even if you choose a more advanced program, or are required to use something else to keep track of your finances, I'd still recommend downloading it simply because...it's fun to use. ;)

Savitar

Program: Savitar
Link: Savitar
Type: Shareware
Price: $15.00

Savitar is the premier MUD/MUSH/MOO client for the Mac. If you're into playing text-based games, the program is definately for you. Thus far, I haven't found a better MOO client. You can use this program without purchasing it, but the creators obviously want you to purchase it. I'd refommend you try it for a while and then purchase it if you like it.

AIM for Mac

Program: AIM
Link: Aim.com
Type: Ad-sponsored Freeware
Price: $0.00

I've got to be honest with you, I love AIM (the service and network). It's a great way to stay connected and communicate with friends. In my opinion, it's one of the best IM services out there. However, if you have a mac, there's no reason you should be using the actual AIM app for Mac. No sense having to deal with those ads and ugly interface. I highly recommend using something better like Adium or iChat.

    Taco HTML Edit

    Program: Taco HTML Edit
    Link: Taco
    Type: Freeware
    Price: $0.00

Need a quick little app to edit HTML? This is it. Don't get me wrong, this is no Dreamweaver replacement, but it's a nice program for quick HTML edits. I'd recommend downloading this even if you just do web development once in a while.

    iCaddy

    Program: iCaddy
    Link: iCaddy
    Type: Freeware
    Price $0.00

From the creators of iRecord. This program's a bit hard to explain, so I'll quote their site. "Is your Dock too cluttered? Is your application folder a monster to navigate? Looks like you need a better way to launch applications. iCaddy is the solution. Forage through the Finder no more. Instead, use iCaddy to launch your favorite apps from a single menu. iCaddy is your key to better organization."

    iRecord

    Program: iRecord
    Link: iRecord
    Type: Freeware
    Price: $0.00

Don't want to buy Quicktime Pro? This program is for you. iRecord allows you to easily record videos of yourself. To take a video, simply click the large red button, do your video, and then click the button again. The program will automatically place a .mov file on your desktop and play your newly-created video in Quicktime. How about pictures? Simply smile into the camera and drag the picture onto your desktop or into your favorite program. It's as easy as that. Highly recommended if you have an iSight.

    Adium

    Program: Adium
    Link: AdiumX.com
    Type: Freeware
    Price: $0.00

I don't have too much to say about Adium. It's one of those programs that you use so much that you kind of forget to appreciate how useful it really is. Adium is an Instant Messaging program that allows you to log in to your AIM, Jabber, MSN, Google Talk, .Mac, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, ICQ, Lotus Samtime, Novell Groupwise, Yahoo! Japan, and/or Zephyr accounts. It also can log your IMs and has plenty of sounds and smilies. Very good replacement for iChat.

    Micon

    Program: Micon
    Link: Micon
    Type: Freeware
    Price: $0.00

Micon a cool little toy. It allows you to change the icon of any program or folder very easily with a friendly GUI. I'd recommend downloading this even if you just want to play around with it for a second.

    Fetch

    Program: Fetch
    Link: FetchSoftWorks.com
    Type: Shareware/Nagware
    Price: $25.00

Okay, I'll start out with this...Fetch is a blessing and a curse. For an FTP program, it is top of the line. I love it's graphics and functionality. It really makes FTP transfers painless. If you choose to purchase the license for $25 after the trial is up, you should have no problems. However, if you choose to continue using the trial, it WILL annoy you. It makes you wait a certain amount of time, which is fine. Then each time you start it up, the time you have to wait gets longer and longer.

    Opera

    Program: Opera
    Link: Opera.com
    Type: Free
    Price: $0.00

Overall, Opera is a good browser. I currently have Safari, Firefox, Camino, and Opera installed on my laptop so I have some pretty good competitors. Most of those browsers have the same general functionality however, Opera has something different. It allows you to type "keywords" into the address bar to search. For example, if I want to find George Washington on Answers.com, I can just type in "a geore washington" into the address bar. It's a pretty cool browser and has a little more compatibility than Safari; about the same as Firefox and Camino. The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't have a bookmarks bar. Atleast from what I can see at first glance, it doesn't.

    AppZapper

    Program: AppZapper
    Link: AppZapper.com
    Type: Trial Shareware
    Price: $12.95

AppZapper is an extremely useful program and a handy little app. When you drag a program into the trash, you may think you're deleting it, but truthfully there may be some files remaining. Problem fixed. Open up AppZapper and drag the app you wish to uninstall right into AppZapper and...zap. It'll show you all the associated files, how much space they're taking up, and it'll ask you to confirm deletion. This $12.95 may end up saving you some major hard drive space in the future.
